A Blood Pressure Cuff, commonly known as a BP cuff or sphygmomanometer cuff, is an essential component of blood pressure measurement devices. It consists of an inflatable bladder encased in a fabric or rubber-like material and is typically wrapped around the upper arm. The cuff is connected to a pressure gauge (manometer) and, in the case of manual devices, a BP bulb for inflation.
The BP cuff is crucial for accurately measuring blood pressure. During a blood pressure measurement, the cuff is inflated to temporarily cut off blood flow in the brachial artery. The pressure is then released gradually, allowing healthcare professionals to observe and record systolic and diastolic blood pressure values.
BP cuffs come in various sizes to accommodate different arm circumferences, ensuring accurate and comfortable measurements for diverse patient populations. Automated electronic blood pressure monitors also incorporate inflatable cuffs but are typically self-inflating and do not require a separate BP bulb.
